SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY FOR ALL

Role of E-mobility in Africa: Towards an inclusive low-carbon transition

Event Info

The transition to E-mobility is gaining momentum in some African countries, although the current market penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) in Africa is low compared with other regions in the world. Future demand for mobility in these countries, and vehicle ownership (two-, three- and four-wheelers) is expected to increase with rapid urbanization, population growth, and rising incomes. E-mobility can be an integral part of a transition towards clean, inclusive transport systems, which support inclusive growth. However, it is important to identify the challenges and reflect on the policy options for an equitable and inclusive transition toward a low-carbon development path.

Since its inception in 2017, the Sustainable Mobility for All Partnership has been advocating for sustainable mobility in international forums, with transport decarbonization being one of the four goals to achieve sustainable transport systems, globally (Universal access, efficiency, and safety are the three other goals). In this event, the Partnership will launch two new Reports that address the following questions:

  • Is the e-mobility model relevant for African low-income countries?
  • What are the synergies with investments in renewable energy?

Target Audience

Co-sponsored by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) funded programmes, the Climate Compatible Growth Programme (CCG) and High Volume Transport (HVT), this event is open to public policy makers, transport and energy experts, researchers, and the wider public and private sector stakeholders interested in or implementing action toward sustainable mobility, especially from the Global South.
