“The air transport industry supports a total of 65.5 million jobs globally,” and has a “global economic impact estimated at $2.7 trillion,” finds a new report released by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) at the 10th Global Sustainable Aviation Summit. The report titled “Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders” discusses the economic, social, and environmental impacts of the aviation industry.

Whilst creating jobs and contributing to the global economy, the sector is also taking significant steps to reduce its environmental impact by cutting greenhouse gas emissions. ATAG’s Executive Director Michael Gill, reminded the aviation executives and experts at the summit, of upcoming milestones for the ICAO Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). “Operators will need to start monitoring fuel use and CO2 emissions from all international flights on 1 January 2019. This is just three months away and, ahead of that milestone, an emissions monitoring plan needs to be developed and signed off by national authorities,” he said. The Global Sustainable Aviation Summit has played an instrumental role in promoting climate action by the industry. It was at this summit that the aviation sector released its declaration on climate action in 2008. This led to the development of CORSIA, “a world-first mechanism for capping CO2 emissions growth from a single international sector, developed by the world’s governments meeting at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).”

This year’s summit also explored new areas of focus. These included sustainable mobility; role of aviation in disaster response; sustainability decision making; reducing plastic in the industry and the view of the future according to millennials and today’s CEOs. The Sustainable Mobility for All initiative led the discussions on sustainable mobility, participating in the inaugural panel, and in a side event organized by Aviation Partnerships for Sustainable Development, which explored the role of aviation in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Held in Geneva, Switzerland, over 300 sustainability experts from 45 countries participated in the 2018 edition of the Global Sustainable Aviation Summit. These included government officials, members of civil society, and private sector representatives.
